The Hammond Chiefs captured the Pastime Tournament Pool at the University of Michigan with a 3-1 record. The only loss came to the South Oakland A’s by a score of 3-2. Nick Nauracy (Crown Point) worked on the mound for the Chiefs. Nauracy tossed a good game, with the Chiefs falling in the 7th inning. After the close loss, the Chiefs rebounded with a 7-0 win over pool leader Michigan Blue Jays. The victory put Hammond in the drivers seat for pool play. Mike Hanchar (Andrean) tossed a two hit gem for the shutout victory. The drivers seat required the Chiefs to win both Saturday games to win the pool. The Chiefs opened with the Fort Wayne Cubs and jumped out to a large lead and finished with a 9-1 five inning victory that lasted only an hour and nine minutes. Cody Dykema (Lake Central) picked up the victory for the chiefs only allowing one run. The Chiefs then completed the pool play title with a 6-2 win over the Schaumburg Seminoles. Cody Haver Andrean notched his first victory of the season with complete game win. The win moved the Chiefs to 3-1 in pool play action. With three teams finishing with a 3-1 record, the run differential rule came into play and the Chiefs easily captured the pool by a large margin. After winning their pool, Hammond had return to the field immediately for it’s third game of the day. The Chiefs responded with a 2-1 win over the Michigan Elite. Brandon Valentine (Hammond Morton) picked up the win with a five inning performance and with the help of reliever, Mike Sammon (Andrean). Sammon entered the game with the 2-1 lead and the bases loaded with no outs. Sammon calmly struck out the next three hitters and sent the Chiefs to the next round of the playoffs. Cody Dyekma (Lake Central) put the Chiefs on top with a big two out hit and RBI. The next morning put Hammond back at the University of Michigan for their fourth game in less than a twenty four hour period. The Chiefs were facing #4 seed, East Coast Michigan. Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond Gavit) picked up the win in relief role. The game went to the ninth inning with a 1-1 tie until the Chiefs broke it open in the top of the ninth with three runs. Now in the final four and the possibility of a chance to play for the Championship, the Chiefs faced the Chicago Cream. Hammond fell behind early, but battled back twice before falling 7-5 to the Cream. The Hammond Chiefs return to action this Tuesday at Valparaiso University where they will face the Summit City Sluggers in one nine inning contest. On Thursday, the Chiefs will depart for Atlanta Georgia where they will compete in the WWBA National Championships held at the East Cobb Complex.
