Chiefs continue their strong pitching in win

HAMMOND | With games almost every day and players just about two weeks from completing a long spring season, Hammond Chiefs coach Dave Sutkowski has used just about all of his arms getting a little work.

The move seems to be working and on Monday night it was Josh Van Beek (Illiana Christian), Mike Poulos (Munster), Danny Poberyko (Bishop Noll) who carried the load.

The three combined for a three-hitter over the Munster Hitmen and prevailed 2-1 while striking out 11.

After allowing a run in the first inning, the Chiefs (10-3) answered with two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run single from Highland’s Tyler Fraley.

The rest was done by the deep pitching staff, as it didn’t allow a hit after the fourth.

Van Beek allowed just three hits over four innings for the win. Then Poulos and Poberyko slammed the door shut on the Hitmen, not allowing a hit for the rest of the contest.
