Chiefs Rebound Late to Defeat NWI Rippers in Last Inning
The Hammond Chiefs finally woke up the bats in the bottom of the Seventh inning to escape with a 2-1 win over the NWI Rippers. Tyler Srcozynski (Illiana Christian) led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single. Srcozynski was advanced to second base with a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Vercimak (Lake Central). After Kody Alayon (Bishop Noll Institute) reached second base, Josh VanBeek (Illiana Christian) doubled to left center field to drive in the tying and game winning runs.
The Chiefs used three pitchers in the win. Chris Shudick (Momence) went the first four innings giving up one run. Chris Majeja (Bishop Noll Institute) relieved Shudick and didn’t allow a run in two innings. Mike Gianakos (Brother Rice) came in to finish the game with a perfect inning for the victory.
