Chiefs Finish Pool Play with a 5-2 Record in Atlanta

Game #1

The Hammond Chiefs got a big start from right-hander 2012 Danny Pobereyko (Munster, IN, Bishop Noll Institute) in a 8-0 win.  Pobereyko pitched all five innings allowing just one hit and striking out 8 batters.  Pobereyko, 6’4” 190lbs, uses an 83-84mph fastball as well as a curveball and change-up.  Pobereyko throws strikes with all pitches and attacks hitters.  

The Chiefs lineup pushed across seven runs in the second inning, thanks in large part to 2013 Jonathan Vercimak (Crown Point, IN Lake Central).  Vercimak had a pair of hits,  drove in two runs, and stole a base.  Vercimak does a good job getting on base and projects as a leadoff type hitter.  2012 Kody Alayon (Hammond, IN, Bishop Noll Institute) had the big hit in the second inning, with a triple that drove in two runs.  Alayon hits the ball hard and runs well on the bases.  

2014 Jose Lopez (Tampa, FL, Brooks-Debartolo) had the lone hit for the Dawg Pound.  Lopez moves well behind the plate as catcher and has a solid arm.

Game #2

Hammond Chiefs beat up on CRFS Baseball 11-2. Josh Van Beek (2013,Liliana Christian HS, IN) hit a triple to right field, scored twice, and got 2 RBI. Christian Rodriguez (2013, Whitney Young HS, IN) started off the game with a double to center field and scored 2 runs. Chris Slivka (2012, Munster HS, IN) hit a double to left field and racked up 2 RBI. Jonathan Vercimak (2013,Lake Central HS, IN) got a hit and scored 3 runs. Kody Alayon (2012, Bishop Noll Institute, IN) had 1 hit and score 2 runs. Danny DeBoer (2013, Lowell HS, IN) had a hit, scored 1 run, and got 1 RBI.  

Game #3

The DBAT Mustangs Oklahoma 18U scored three runs in the top of the 3rd inning and added two more late to secure a 5-2 victory over the Hammond Chiefs.

David Petrino (2012, Lowell, AR) batted a perfect 2-2 and crossed home plate twice for the Mustangs.  Kylar Stout (2013, Union HS, Broken Arrow, OK) doubled and finished with 1 RBI in the win.

Trey Cobb (2013, Broken Arrow HS, Broken Arrow, OK) pitched two scoreless innings for DBAT and gave up zero hits.  The Oklahoma State commit struck out three and was consistent between 87-89mph on his fastball with a peak of 90mph. Cobb attacked hitters and showed good hip rotation on his delivery.

Kody Alayon (2012, Hammond, IN) accounted for both RBIs in the loss for the Chiefs. 

Game #4

Hammond Chiefs scored 6 in the first and the fourth to propel them to a 12-2 victory over Cherokee Baseball. Tyler Sroczynski (2013, Illiana Christian, IN) went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI’s.  Danny DeBoer (2013, Lowell, IN) pitched in with two hits and three RBI’s.  Jonathan Vercimak (2013, Lake Central, IN) helped out with a single and two RBI’s.  Vercimak also pitched four innings and struck out five.  He allowed two hits and two walks.  He was around the strike zone 67% of the time.

Reid Cantrell (2014, Cak, TN) went 1 for 2 with an RBI for Cherokee.  Patrick Hoskins (2013, Halls, TN) also had a hit in the loss. 

Game #5

643 DP Cougars 17U beat the Hammond Chiefs 4-2. 

2013 Matthew Meeder (Roswell, GA, Roswell HS), a Mercer University commit, went 1-2 with an RBI for the Cougars. 2013 Jim Voyles (Atlanta, GA, Holy Innocents Episcopal HS) pitched 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run with 3 strikeouts. His fastball peaked at 87mph. 

2013 Jeremy Briggs (Hebron, IN, Andrean HS) went 3-3 with 2 RBI’s and a double for the Chiefs. Briggs showed a fluid stroke, and gap to gap hitting with some pop. 2013 Josh Van Beek (St. John, IN, Illiana Christian HS) pitched 4 2/3 innings, recording 5 strikeouts and peaking his fastball at 84mph. Van Beek showed long arm action and smooth delivery.

Game #6

The Hammond Chiefs held off a seventh inning rally from the MPI to win 5-3.  The Chiefs got a big homerun from 2013 Danny DeBoer (Lowell, IN, Lowell) who drove in two runs in the game.  2012 Kody Alayon (Hammond, IN, Bishop Noll Institute) had a hit and drove in two runs for Hammond.  Alayon is an aggressive hitter with a quick bat.  

2013 Chad Mateja (Munster, IN, Bishop Noll Institute) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings for Hammond.  Mateja struck out two batters and allowed just one hit.  Mateja throws a 75-77mph fastball.  

2012 Ryan Herzon (Miami, FL, Felix Varela) had two hits and two runs driven in for MPI.  Herzon had a triple and runs very well on the bases.  Herzon has a confident approach and good bat speed. 

Game #7

Hammond Chiefs pitchers were able to shut down the NY Swarm lineup in a 4-0 win.  2013 Mike Gianakos (Evergren Park, IL, Brother Rice) started pitching for Hammond throwing three innings striking out three batters.  He was then relieved by 2013 Justin Landgrebe (Valparaiso, IN, Washington Township) who pitched the final four innings.  Landgrebe was dominant striking out four hitters and not allowing a hit.  Landgrebe throws strikes and his off-speed pitches have potential.  His fastball sit around 75-81mph.  

2013 Tyler Sroczynski (Dyer, IN, Illiana Christian) paced the Chiefs lineup, going 2-3 and stealing two bases.  Srocynski does a good job of getting on base as a leadoff hitter and has good speed.  2013 Jonathan Vercimak (Crown Point, IN, Lake Central) had a double, a steal, and scored twice for Hammond.  

2013 James Wynne (Brewster, NY, North Salem) had the only extra base hit for NY.
