MERRILLVILLE | Andrean (2-0) was able to hold off a late rally by Clark (4-1) Tuesday night and escape with an 8-6 baseball victory. After cruising through the first five innings, all of which were pitched by Mike Hanchar, Clark showed signs of life once the lefty left the game. Clark batted around in the sixth, scoring four runs and trimming the deficit to 7-5. Andrean added an insurance run in the sixth and Clark another run in the seventh for the final score. Three of the four runs came off Hanchar’s replacement, Nick Tobeye, who departed having not recorded an out. Hanchar, however, tossed five one-run innings and struck out seven batters in his 2011 debut. “I was definitely anxious to get back out there,” Hanchar said. “I came in with confidence. I had a good defense behind me. I knew they were gonna put up runs for me.” Andrean did just that, scoring six runs during his five innings. “(Andrean) scored a couple runs, made a couple bad plays, but we still came out on top with our good defense,” he said. Hanchar credited his fastball/change-up combination for his success. “Fastball, change-up, pretty much getting ahead in the count,” Hanchar said of what worked for him. “If I struggled a little bit, if they put the ball in play, I had my defense there to back me up.” The fourth inning proved to be prime for Andrean’s surge, highlighted by RBI singles from Mark Pishkur and Zach Goldasich. Many of Clark’s miscues came in the third and fourth when the Pioneers committed an error, threw two wild pitches and had a passed ball. “We had three or four guys thrown out on the bases,” Clark coach Chris Moore said. “Those base-running errors just can’t happen. This is definitely something we have to work on. It comes down to focus level. It’s a good measuring stick for us to see where we’re at.”
