MERRILLVILLE | Andrean pitcher Cody Haver wanted to do something to make up for the two run-scoring wild pitches he threw in the first inning of Friday’s game. “I got off to a rough start and put us in a hole,” Haver said. “I felt like I needed to do something to set it right.” Haver got that chance in the second inning and delivered. His first-ever grand slam gave the Times No. 3 59ers a 5-2 lead and led them to a 13-5 Northwest Crossroads Conference win over Kankakee Valley. Haver also got his first win of the year on the mound, where he hurled a complete game. “First conference start, first win of the year, first grand slam,” Haver recounted. “Turned out to be a pretty good day.” It didn’t quite start that way. Haver gave up a pair of two-out hits, then threw a pair of wild pitches to spot the Kougars a 2-0 lead. The 59ers cut it in half in the bottom of the first, then took the lead for good in the second when Haver jacked a pitch over the right-center wall at about the 350-foot mark. K.V. cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the third when Mike Tilley stole home after a fake steal of second base by Dylan Patrick. Andrean was aggressive all night, stealing six bases. They swiped two of them in the bottom of the third when they tacked on two more runs on a single by DH Matt DeSomers. “We got some very timely hits tonight,” Andrean coach Dave Pishkur said. “There were two or three times where a clutch hit stretched our lead and made it a lot tougher on K.V.” The exact opposite was true for the Kougars (12-6, 3-6). They stranded eight runners, four of them in scoring position. “We got a lot of hits and a lot of baserunners, but we were missing a couple of clutch drives,” K.V. coach Doug Greenlee said. “We have had a very tough week in conference play. The NCC is tough enough as it is, but we made it a little tougher on ourselves.” Kankakee Valley was led by Zach DeFries, who went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Patrick was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Tyler Simmons had a pair of hits. Haver finished his offensive night with two hits and five RBIs. DeSomer went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. The Kougars are 0-4 this week, all conference games. Andrean, in the meantime, went 5-0 on the week, also all conference games.
