HAMMOND | The 2012 Hammond Chiefs have a little bit of a different look this summer than in previous years.

This team contains more speed than power, but used a little bit of both in the destruction of the Lombard Lightning 13-3 in five innings on Tuesday night.

Hammond’s power suppy came from Munster’s Chris Slivka, who went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBIs, and a run.

“We’re always gonna find a way to get going, whether it’s by getting a bunt down or hitting the ball to the right side,” Slivka said.

After recording a triple in Monday’s win against the Munster Hitmen, speedy shortstop and Bishop Noll product Kody Alayon added two hits and two RBIs and scored a run out of the No. 2 hole.

“I’ve batted enough in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to know what to do with the situation,” Alayon said. “My job is to get on base. We worked on bunting for 20 minutes before the game because we couldn’t get one down (Monday).”

After scoring five runs in the first three innings, the Chiefs (9-3) put up a six spot in the fourth thanks largely in part to Slivka, who had a two-run double and scored a run to highlight the inning.

Chiefs coach Dave Sutkowski acknowledged Alayon’s versatility and Slivka’s power as an important part of the offense.

“Kody is just an overall player for us and it’s a luxury to have his versatility in the lineup and Chris just hits the ball hard,” he said.

The pitching was also stellar again, as Lowell’s Danny DeBoer (1-0) recorded the win with 3 2/3 innings of six-hit ball while allowing just one earned run and striking out three.

Michigan City’s Andrew Ray relieved DeBoer and didn’t allow a hit or a run in the process.

“We make sure the guys get some innings in during the week because it’s kind of like a major or minor league setting where we’re playing almost everyday,” stated Sutkowski. “We just also have to make sure our pitchers aren’t getting overused.”
