17U Chiefs Outlast 18U Hammond Hurricanes Purple

After letting a late lead slip away, the Indiana Chiefs (5-0) won in walk-off fashion Saturday afternoon in Hammond. The Hammond Hurricanes rallied from down two in the seventh inning to force extras. The bottom half of the eighth inning started with a Corey Rusboldt (Chesterton) double. Rusboldt was then sacrificed to third base by Frank Podkul (Andrean) before Jimmy Skiff’s (Andrean) RBI suicide squeeze brought in the winning run. The Chiefs got a strong outing from starter Kevin O’Donnell (Highland). O’Donnell threw 5 innings of one run ball while striking out 4. The winning pitcher in relief was Cullen Carey (1-0, Andrean). Offensively, Jamie Johnson (Andrean) drove in all 3 of his runs on two out singles. Other contributors included Nick Podkul (Andrean, 2 hits), David Hladek (Munster, double) and Alec Skalka (Munster, 2 walks and a run scored).

The 17U Chiefs have a home doubleheader scheduled for Sunday starting at 1pm against the Hammond Hurricanes Black. The probable Chief starters are Matt Dvorscak (1-0, Whiting) and Jimmy Skiff (1-0).
