After a ground out in his first at-bat Saturday, Lake Central’s Cody Dykema hoped for better results at the North-South All-Star event.

Dykema finished 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

“He was outstanding,” L.C. coach Jeff Sandor said of Dykema. “Far and away, he was (the North’s) best player. I was just so thrilled for him.”

Dykema wasn’t too thrilled with the outcome of either game, as the North lost 10-3 and then 14-3 in Fort Wayne.

“I guess I did pretty good, but the results really didn’t show it,” said Dykema, an Illinois-Chicago recruit. “(The South) really outplayed us.”

In the opener, Dykema was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in four innings at shortstop. Dykema played the entire nightcap, and improved on his opening performance.

Dykema wasn’t that bad in the field either, cleanly making all three balls hit to him.

“The first one was routine,” said Dykema, who played two innings at second base in the second game. “The next one was a line drive one-hopper, and I backhanded that one and threw to second. I guess this does boost my confidence.”

Sandor was thoroughly impressed with Dykema’s all-around performance.

“He’s a pretty humble and fearless kid,” Sandor said of Dykema. “Out of the whole northern part of the state, he was just one of four middle infielders to make it. I don’t know if he really knows what he did today.”

Dykema wasn’t the lone local representative at the event.

Valparaiso’s Jerrick Suiter threw two scoreless innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Whiting’s Elliott Bajda was 2-for-5, Crown Point’s Jose Andrade was 1-for-3 and Andrean’s Tyler Ochi was 0-for-2. On the mound, Hanover Central’s Andrew Wellwerts allowed one earned run and had three strikeouts in three innings of work.
